What's hot and what's not in legal recruitment

Robina Clough

A quick look at new assistant level lawyer instructions received in August shows that the most in demand lawyers are those within finance (encompassing either general banking or more specialised finance disciplines), followed by litigation/arbitration lawyers, which are just ahead of intellectual property specialists and real estate lawyers.

Not so in demand and at the lower end of the list include private client, funds and employment lawyers. In other areas, such as construction and media, there has been no new appetite from law firms. This doesn’t mean to say there aren’t any roles out there at all (there are existing vacancies from previous months still open) but nothing new has appeared on the radar.

August is of course a quiet month and we generally see less recruitment activity than at other times of the year. Having said that, there does seem to have been a relatively steady flow of instructions – an encouraging sign that there is still a reasonably robust recruitment market.
