Victoria Basham’s Global Legal Post article on Kirkland & Ellis’ new policy to change the pay structure for partners quoted director Sloane Poulton to contextualise the policy in the wider partner pay environment. Sloane explained how a split pay structure – which for Kirkland & Ellis means partners receive 45% of their pay at one time and the following 55% the year after – is not an unknown phenomenon. He detailed how the “details” are what partners should pay attention to and what should cause them to question a possible move. The article then addressed the details of Kirkland’s policy which has seen a reduction in notice periods alongside the new split pay structure. Other firms are considering adopting similar measures.
