Law.com cites Edwards Gibson data and features commentary by Edwards Gibson Director on Surge in Tax Partner Moves in London
Edwards Gibson is delighted that its market-leading research has been cited in today’s Law.com article: “Inside the 88% Surge in Tax Partner Moves Across Big Law in London”. The piece, written by Melina Block, examines the unprecedented rise in tax partner moves across London and the strategic drivers behind this surge.
Our latest data shows that 140 partner moves occurred in London during September and October 2025, a 12% increase on the same period last year and 26% above the five-year average. Within these moves, the standout figure falls in tax moves: there have been a total of 32 tax partner moves so far this year — an 88% increase, compared to an annual average of just 17 between 2020 and 2024.
The article explores the factors fuelling this surge, including anticipated private capital work, growing demand for full-service capability, and the increasing strategic importance of tax expertise in complex deals. Edwards Gibson Director, Sloane Poulton comments:
“It is driven by firms increasingly seeing tax as essential to complex deals. We have often seen tax partners as the kingmakers in team moves and partners who rely on tax won’t move to firms with a weak or non-existent tax offering. There has also been a bit of froth and musical chairs but the music continues!”
This analysis underscores how tax lawyers have become a staple for firms competing for high-value mandates and talent in London’s dynamic legal market.
