Forbes cites Edwards Gibson analysis on the rule of law and the business of Big Law

October 2026

Edwards Gibson is pleased to have been cited in Forbes, the US business publication, in an article by Joseph Andrew examining why the rule of law, and the democratic institutions which underpin it, matter to the business of law.

In“Why Free Elections Matter To The Business Of Law”, Andrew argues that much of the earning power of US law firms ultimately depends on confidence that legal rights will be upheld, contracts enforced and public power constrained by law. The article examines how weakening that confidence could have consequences not just for the legal system itself, but for investment, transactions and the international attractiveness of American law and legal institutions.

The article cites Scott Gibson and Sloane Poulton’s March 2025 Edwards Gibson essay,“Lawyers should remember that the financial success of Big Law is predicated entirely on the rule of law”, which argued that a more capricious legal system could ultimately undermine Big Law’s financial success, notwithstanding the immediate opportunities for legal work that political and institutional upheaval can create. Forbes also links directly to the original Edwards Gibson essay.

Andrew picks up that theme in considering the economic importance of free and fair elections, arguing that while political disorder can generate investigations, disputes and restructuring work in the short term, the longer-term prosperity of major law firms relies on the strength and predictability of the institutions on which their clients depend.
